Mecham Racing    Prototype BUILD

Motivation behind the 65CR

---------------------------------------------------

I have always enjoyed the timeless curves and raw orientation of the 427 Cobra. One problem, the cockpit was too short.

What to do?

My brother remained in the tuner world amidst a resurgence of interest in performance vehicles. Unfortunately, the factories now embraced this movement and developed extraordinary offerings. With not much left to legally improve, he turned his sights to developing an unrestricted component car. On the wall in his office hung a picture of a modified 1965 Corvette roadster he was racing on the banks at Riverside International Speedway. It's a bit bigger than a Cobra. I know I fit. I said, "What about that?".

He was off. After some time a plug was crafted, molds built, and the first body pulled. A chassis was started, but never finished before funding ran out.

I had seen the body and believed the niche it could fill was yet to be properly explored. The original C2 was a handsome body sitting atop a weak ladder frame that glared out from underneath. The naked suspension stared from below the abbreviated front.

After a time I acquired the first body along with an attempt at an under-body frame. The frame was unusable. My intentions are to produce a track-worthy piece (spaceframe) with an integrated body that preserves the car’s original character. The “Prototype Build” page will explain this in detail.
